On this page we'll be providing links to help you get started and then book your tests.   To find out what actually goes on during the theory and practical test then please go to the Test Info page.

A good place to start might be the Step to Step Guide for Learning to Drive a Car.   It will take you through all the key things you will need to consider.

Provisional Licence

To get your first provisional driving licence online for a moped, motorbike or car you must:

  • be at least 15 years and 9 months old
  • be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away
  • provide an identity document unless you have a valid UK biometric passport
  • provide addresses where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
  • pay the relevant fee
  • have your National Insurance number if known

Once your provisional licence becomes valid (17 for a car) you can start driving lessons. You are also eligible to take your theory test.

Disability Living Allowance

If you are receiving disability living allowance at the higher rate your provisional licence will come into effect when you are 16.

Eyesight
Before you start to learn to drive, make sure you are aware of the eyesight requirements. If you need to wear glasses or corrective lenses to meet the requirements you must wear them every time you drive.

Private Practice

Important note: If you want to practise your driving with an accompanying driver, the accompanying driver must be over the age of 21 and must have held (and still hold) a full licence, in the relevant vehicle category, for three years.
